Okay, I don't get it.
I've always washed my hair every day, and so does everyone in my immediate family, so I don't get how this is supposed to work. Do you still WET your hair in the shower everyday and then go through all the combing and drying of it, just without it being clean? Or are you supposed to wear a shower cap or keep your head out of the water or something? Today I kept my head out of the water. I've tried the wetting and not washing thing before and my hair always just still feels dirty to me, and never looks very good and I think "why go through all this effort of combing and drying then?". What do you non-wash-everyday-ers do?

I've always washed it everyday, but now that I have the expensive color in it, and don't want to be spending money to get it re-done often, I want to try to make it last if I can. The last time I got color it seemed to go away pretty quickly. I thought maybe it was because I was using the cheapest shampoos I could find at the time. So I upgraded to a less cheap shampoo, but by then the color was already gone. Yesterday I went to the store to buy some shampoo for color-treated hair, I bought it, but it says "makes color last up to 40 washes!" and I am thinking "only 40 days?!" but of course, 40 washes is a long time if you only wash your hair once a week!

I just can't even imagine doing that though. I also bought some "dry" shampoo yesterday that is supposed to help with oiliness on days you don't wash your hair. I tried it today, it's okay, but when you're used to having fresh clean hair everyday, and never use products in it, it just makes it feel heavy and weird. But my biggest complaint right now is that the shower in the morning is usually the one thing that wakes me up and makes me feel ready for the day, but apparently if I don't let that hot water hit my scalp it's just not the same. I have bad sinuses, and letting it run over my head significantly helps them, and so right now, having showered and used that weird ass dry shampoo instead, I still feel like crap and just want to sleep all day. I do NOT want to feel like this everyday.

At this moment, I think I give up and am going to wash this weird dry shampoo out of my hair and feel like me again and actually be able to start my day for real.
EDIT: And I just did and I feel marvelous. I may just have to give in to the fact that I am someone who just has to wash everyday to feel like myself, color be damned. *sigh*

I don't wash mine everyday, but then, I take baths, not showers. If you've always washed it everyday, you're better off sticking to it, your hair gets used to it and creates oil quicker, supposedly. Maybe try less shampoo? Some places reccomend deep conditioning once a week to preserve colour, you know those things you heat up and leave in?

I've never tried those deep leave-in conditioners, but I've also not heard them in conjunction with color lasting longer. I do use a weekly thing for conditioning and then a daily one that's weaker though. But I will look into it. Thanks!

You may be right about hair just getting used to it. My stylists have never said my hair is damaged or in bad shape because of it, and if I don't wash it every day it gets very greasy and I hate the way it looks and feels (which is why I was trying that dry shampoo, because otherwise I absolutely would never try not washing it every day).

I stopped washing my hair everyday (I wash it every other day) a while back and, while there was a very brief oily transition period, my hair went back to it's natural state in almost no time. Of course, my goal was a bit different than yours...I say the less chemicals in there, but I don't know what that does for the hair coloring.

Dry shampoo is a waste of time.

If you need to wash your hair every day then do it :)

I wash mine about once a week, mostly because I just hate washing my hair. I use a shower cap in between washes, it's a nice big thick good quality one and I love it! If my hair is starting to look a bit feral I'll often just wash my fringe and that gets me through another day, two if I am lucky :)

Also, I use permanent black hair dye on most of my hair, I also use Joico shampoo and conditioner and haven't used cheap shampoos in years. The black still fades but takes less time than the semi permanent red I use in the fringe so I think fade is pretty normal. :(

Yeah, I know fade is normal, I was just hoping to make it last.

I think what it comes down to is what feels and looks right to the person, and I guess I just don't feel right unless I wash it every day, which kinda stinks as far as the color goes.

I wash my hair once a week and it never gets wet in between unless I get caught in the rain or happen to go swimming (neither of which happen very often). I've never used a shower cap, I just tie my hair up. But I don't have fringe - when I did have shorter hair in the front I used to tie it up and put a head band on to keep the front hair out of my way.

Ok, well at least I know I did it right. Still not sure it's for me though. Thanks for the input.

I wash mine once a week, twice in the summer. But I rinse it with water every time I shower (most everyday)

Hairdressers will always tell you less washing is better, but as it's been mentioned it really is personal preference. I like how my hair looks the dirtier it is. I also dye mine platinum which makes it REALLY dry. After I wash it I use a crazy leave in and try not to brush it for that day (which mostly means it is up in a scarf). Honestly I only wash it because my scalp gets crazy itchy if I don't.

You might want to try milder shampoos so you can still wash daily.

How do you know a shampoo is mild? I assume the shampoo for color-treated hair that I get must be fairly mild.

It takes about two weeks to adjust to washing every other day. Wash your hair day one, day two, don't wet it in the shower (that will make the situation worse) and wear it up. Switch to an SLS-free, paraben free shampoo (I like the Yes to Carrots line). SLS is a strong detergent and will strip your color and it strips all the natural oils from your scalp... which causes your scalp to over-produce oil which is why your hair is oily by day two.

You just have to make it through the first two weeks. Wearing your hair up will make it manageable. After you get over it, your hair will be SO much healthier in the long run and your color will last longer. Worth it!
