Fisher - "Dream On"

Man, this is hard to choose. I love cover songs as much as I love 80s music (and when they combine, ohhhh, boy I get excited), so I have a whole playlist of stuff to choose from. Choosing a favorite is no small feat for me.

But the first that comes to mind is Fisher's amazing cover of Aerosmith's classic song "Dream On". It's one of those covers that's so good you don't even really want to hear the original anymore. In fact, I heard the original on the radio a few weeks ago and I literally thought "wow, this version kinda blows", which is harsh for a classic song. I just love her version though, it has so much more angst and power, and her taking on that high note is friggin brilliant.

Day 23: Your favorite duet.
John Prine & Iris DeMent - "In Spite of Ourselves"

There's a bunch of duets I like, but there's none that universally make me smile whenever they come on quite like this one. John Prine is a bit of a legend in the country and bluegrass community, and Iris DeMent is a new favorite, she's folk-country I guess. Funny this is that I hadn't even heard John Prine's music until I saw that he did a duet with Iris, whom I already liked. So I listened to it and liked it immediately. This song, it's so amusing and cute, and the lyrics are just off color enough to pull it together. Love love love.

Day 22: Your favorite song from a movie.
Bjork - "New World"

This is from the movie "Dancer in the Dark", perhaps one of the most emotionally devastating movies ever. It is directed the acclaimed Lars von Trier and stars Bjork as the lead character. She wrote all the music for the movie, which is an unconventional musical, and performed it all as well. Bjork is an unconventional singer and writer, and I think her performance and singing in the film made it the powerful film it was. The character has a childlike quality like she does, and had it been portrayed by a more conventionally beautiful actress, and sung a more conventional way it just would not have the punch it did with her.

The most famous song from the movie is "I've Seen It All" which was nominated for an Academy Award, but this song has always been the one I enjoyed listening to the most. Shortly after I purchased the movie (and I already had the soundtrack/album) I remember having most of the lights off in my room and from one end of the room I cranked the song on the stereo, and at the other end was my TV at end credits which is when the song plays, and they weren't quite in sync, but close enough that the reverberations and depth of the song enclosed around me and it was a really beautiful experience. It's one of those songs that I find so beautiful I almost want to evaporate and BE air to be part of the song sometimes. As it is, I prefer to listen to it via headphones if I can't crank it.

Mike Doughty - "Busting Up a Starbucks"
Juliana Hatfield - "Nirvana"

I'm not really into angry music, and I'm not the type who enjoys breaking things. I hate being destructive, actually. I remember being upset enough to throw something maybe twice in my life.

So instead I posted some songs about that feeling, that feeling of just wanting to flip tables and fuck shit up....but ironically, neither of the songs make me want to do that particularly, themselves. Well, maybe a tad, but not enough to ever go through with it.

Day 20: Your favorite breakup song.
I couldn't choose just 1 for today, so I narrowed it down to 2.

Fiona Apple - "Love Ridden"
Jonatha Brooke - "No Better"

I tried to decide on what/which songs for the day by the songs that I love and feel like really communicate the feelings that go along with a break-up. The Fiona song is just a beautiful example of the feelings post break-up where you're trying to adjust to a life where you still see your ex from time to time, but now he's not "baby" or "honey" anymore, and now you can't turn to him for support, and you have to fight that urge to hug or curl up with them now because that's not who you are anymore. It's a transition that is painful to get through, most change is, but especially when you've lost an essential part of your day. The change of feelings is not the only change we have to deal with.

The Jonatha Brooke song is one that I've turned to after a break-up. It's actually a song inspired by Jonatha's mother and father's relationship. They were married for most of their lives, had a mid-life crisis, got divorced, and then a few years later ended up getting re-married. But in the song there's so many phrases that she uses that really tell how it feels to know that the person you loved no longer wants you anymore.
'Cause I still see your face
And I still wear that ring
And I will not lie
It's the hardest thing
I still love you, and you don't want me....

I can't even tell you how that last line can dig in when you've just been broken up with. But it's how you feel when the break-up wasn't mutual. It's awful to feel left behind and like you aren't good enough anymore. This song tells the story beautifully, if not heart-wrenchingly.

The Innocence Mission - "The Melendys Go Abroad"

I generally don't gravitate towards music without words. I really had no idea what to post today, I first thought of movie themes. I have the themes from my two favorite movies on my iTunes and they both make me smile. But they make me smile because they remind me of the movie and give me a feeling because of that. There's a calypso cover of a They Might Be Giants song that is instrumental that I thoroughly enjoy, but the song originally has words, so it somehow doesn't feel right either. But yesterday I received the copy of the most recent Innocence Mission record that I had ordered last week. The Innocence Mission usually include at least one instrumental song per album. There were two on this one, but this one stood out to me because it's really beautiful, so I thought I'd put that here today.

If you don't know who The Innocence Mission are...they're a band that lives in my hometown of Lancaster, PA. They make somber yet somewhat joyful, very mellow and intimate music. It's delicate, lullabye-ish and it feels like a warm blanket on a cold rainy night to me. They calm me.

Day 15: A song you liked in high school.
Savage Garden - "I Want You"

I could have chosen something by Lisa Loeb, as she was my favorite back then, but alas, this is the song that gives me memories of high school. This song provided my best memory from my senior prom. My prom wasn't very memorable. I didn't have a date, neither did Aleks, so we just drove together and hung out when all our other friends were dancing with theirs. We had a live band for most of the night, but when they took breaks, and when they ended and there was still about an hour left, there was someone DJing. It was near the end of the night and a lot of people had left. But all my friends were still there, as we weren't the drinkers or the ones going to have sex that night, so we had no where else to go. We were dancing when this song came on and all my friends started beaming from ear to ear and all turned to me...you see, this song was really popular at the time, and my friends all liked it too, but I was the only one that could sing along and they all thought it was a hoot that I knew all the lyrics. So they all made a big circle, all eyes on me and I sang along. For a moment, I was the center of attention and everyone was having fun because of me. I can't tell you how infrequently that happens. Hah. So yeah, this song makes me feel good. Travis likes it too, so we often sing it in the car since it's on the playlist I made for us.

Day 13: A song you sing in the shower:

Unfortunately I don't feel like I really have an answer for this one. It's not because I don't sing in the shower, I do, though not as often as I used to. Now it's only the occasional humming of a tune and nothing belted out or just a line or two that comes into my head randomly. But years ago I used to make "shower mixes", stuff I was into at the time and wanted to listen to while showering and getting ready. I'd carry my boom box into the bathroom and put it on the counter within arm's reach of the shower in case I wanted to change songs, and I'd groove in the shower. Sometimes I came darn close to slipping and breaking my neck I'd be boogeying so much in there. But as I said, I can't really remember any songs that I particularly liked to sing to in the shower.

Day 11: A Song That Reminds You of Your Mother: Dolly Parton - "Coat of Many Colors"

I'm in a hurry so I can't say too much, but basically...this song really touches my mom and hits close to home because it reminds her of her own youth. Her mother made her and her sisters dresses from old flour sacks and whatever she had around, and they were looked down on at school because they didn't have much money, but at home there was a lot of love, and now she'd do anything to have something made by her mother again.

Day 10: A song that reminds you of your father:
Laura Branigan - "Gloria"

My dad loved this song when it came out, as did I. I got the song as a 45 single, my dad also had it in some other form. My dad used to BLARE it through the house. He's not huge into music, but when he does listen to music he usually just lays on the bed, turns on the stereo really loud and just lays there and listens. He'd do that for this song. One day I had the song playing in my room and I was just playing with my dolls or something, he comes in, walks over to my stereo, says to me "this song is meant to be played LOUD" and then turns the volume knob way up and then leaves. So now every time I hear this song I think of Dad saying it has to be played loud and just how much he always liked this song. I made him a mix of songs I knew he liked a few years back and had to put this song on it, he was so pleased, he said he hadn't heard it in years.

A band/singer whose popularity you'll never understand: Dave Matthews Band
My first instinct is to say the band that grates on me the most, which is Dave Matthews Band, but it's not like I think they're the most un-talented bunch of hacks ever, I just don't understand how mediocre talents can get such the rabid fanbase. But I guess jam bands have always had their place with the hippies and the WASPs looking to find themselves a personality and making fools of themselves instead. But I just hear his voice and I get upset. I remember that their first single (or the first one I ever heard at least) was popular at the same time the Blues Traveler song was popular and so I associated them. Before gym class girls in the locker room were discussing the 2 and which was better and I was surprised how thoroughly most of them were behind the Dave Matthews, as I thought the Blues Traveler song was better, if only by a little. In the year after that the girls got all swoony over the band, and by the time I was a freshman in college the girls would get together like little sleep over groups to moon over Dave Matthews lyrics, some girls even got tears in their eyes. That was when my hatred started, and why I could never hear them and not roll my eyes. I think they have some good lyrics at times, but to have these girls swooning and crying?! WTF?

Day 6: Favorite Band - The Bangles

At first I thought I didn't have a good answer for this question. I thought maybe it should go by number of plays in my library, number of times I've seen them in concert...and that would certainly lead me to They Might Be Giants, and I do love them. But the more I thought about it the more I realized that it had to be The Bangles. They were my first favorite band. They were my favorites all while I was growing up and I think they still hold up today. I think my favorite thing about them is how they harmonize, how they work together. As far as all-girl bands go, they were one of the first really successful ones, but whereas with bands like The Go-gos where you hear about all this drama that went on behind the scenes, The Bangles were just friends that had a singular mission, make good music. In a time where most women were just pretty front women, they were playing their instruments and writing their own songs (though most of the songs picked as singled ended up being ones they didn't get to write themselves, which is lame) . I love that every woman in the group writes. It's less about "we ALL have to write together" and instead let each one do their own thing, bring it to the table and then they all contribute to performing each others songs. Not only that, but they all sing too. I love that. They're also the only band I know the names of all the band members too, that has to count for something. I <3 you Bangles.

I thought I'd include a video, but one that isn't annoyingly familiar to everyone. How about a song off their first major record, one written by THEM, featuring their drummer Debbi singing, and has Leonard Nemoy in it? Okay, then!

This one I don't know how to answer. I guess the simplest answer would just be to say Tori, but do they mean singer as in vocalist or singer as in "musician/act"? I love Tori's music but I wouldn't say her voice wows me or anything. But if I did have to choose one that does I am not sure who I'd choose. I guess Patty Griffin. No clear cut answer for today's for me, yesterday the answer was pretty much the same regardless so it didn't matter.

Day 1: Your favorite song.

Tori Amos "Spark".
This has been my favorite song for years. It's so powerful and personal to me. It gives me chills and if I let myself really get submerged in it, I will cry. It takes you from the depths of hopelessness to the power of defeating your demons in one song and I feel like, as a listener, I have done all those things along with her. The song was written at a time when Tori was in a very dark place, having just had a number of miscarriages in a row and feeling like there was something wrong with her and she was doubting her place in this life and what purpose life had, but she dug herself out of that hole.

The video for it is amazing as well and was partly what made it my favorite initially. A woman struggles to get away from her kidnapper, all the while her hands are tied behind her back and she's blindfolded. Whenever the song swells in the middle in a fit of triumph I picture Tori surging out of the water as she does in the video. It's a powerful video representation of a powerful song. A woman getting herself out of a dark and dangerous situation of a different kind. In the actual song it's more of a struggle with one's self.
lululuvsol: (pets)
I came across this entry on a music blog I read and wanted to re-post in my own way.

“A dog is very easy to break, but cats make you work for their affection. They don’t sell out the way dogs do.”

I was thinking about how indie band’s obsession with cats (at least 5 indie albums from this year alone have the domestic felines on the cover) and then I thought about the above quote spoken by Robert De Niro in Meet The Parents. Are cats the indie to dogs’ mainstream? They certainly are the less popular, less accessible and arguably quirkier of the two pets. Food for thought.
As an indie rock fan, and a cat lover, I like this theory.

And I especially love that this cat even filed himself in the Cs, for cat. Cat Power, indeed.
