I make no qualms about my love of melancholy music. Some people absolutely cannot handle sad music, I live for it. It's so beautiful, and when I am melancholy (not depressed, it's different) I feel much closer to the world than I do on an average day.

A few years ago I made a mix of some of the most beautifully sad songs I knew and put them on a CD together for my sad nights. I was listening to it in the kitchen one morning when my mother walked in and said "whoa, Anne, how can you listen to this? it makes me want to kill myself!"...And to this day I now call it my "Suicide Mix", heh. Only a few of the tracks below are ones that were also on the original Suicide Mix, but I just felt like compiling some great sad mood songs together. I don't condone suicide, but I do condone the music. Hopefully some of you can also see their beauty.

  • Azure Ray - "November"
  • Damien Rice - "The Blower's Daughter" (YouSendit)
  • Tori Amos - "Hey Jupiter" (YouSendit)
  • Evanescence - "Hello" (YouSendit)
  • Sinead Lohan - "Everything Around Me Is Changing" (YouSendit)
  • Jen Wood - "Imperfect" (YouSendit)
  • The Cardigans - "03:45 No Sleep" (YouSendit)
  • Martha Wainwright - "I Will Internalize"
  • Emm Gryner - "For What Reason" (YouSendit)
  • Gary Jules - "Mad World" (YouSendit)

No sad mix is complete without an Elliott Smith song!

Dude, I HAD "Needle in the Hay" (or I thought I did) until I realized that it was actually another one of his songs the link was directing towards) but by the time I realized it was a bad link I was too tired to upload it myself, heh. So it goes.

HURT by NIN is a must, as well as any Death Cab for Cutie. Maybe I'll post a list.

The Emm Gryner song is a Death Cab cover...I just prefer her version because it's just deathly sad, yikes. Good call on Hurt.

There are so many others, but it was already 4am, heh. Good to have you on board!

Nothing wrong with a little melancholy in your music or your movies. Gotta have it sometimes, I say. I'll have to check out some of those songs.
