new music!
Mar. 7th, 2008 05:32 pmNot much going on today. It's been raining all day. I suppose we should be glad all we're getting is rain since Travis says in Columbus all that rain was snow and they even called off work for him! A day off work is cool, but I think I'd rather go to work if it meant no snow, I'm so over snow.
Since I don't have much to talk about today I get to talk about the music I got for my birthday! I got 4 CDs I asked for, and then, miraculously the Nicole Atkins CD I won from a music blog a month ago arrived yesterday too! It was like a cosmic birthday present! So that's 5 CDs I've gotten to listen to. I've also been busy downloaded some more 80s music from iTunes with the gift certificate my brother gave me...so I am rolling in music! It's delicious. But anyway, I know since it's Friday evening most people won't read this post since people seem to do their LJ reading mostly during the week, but I guess that's their loss.
Here's what I got and my thoughts on it, plus a sample:
Mike Doughty "Golden Delicious" - "Navigating By The Stars At Night"
If any of you read my music blog, then you already know how I feel about this album. I really like Mike Doughty's last 2 albums but this one just isn't as good. The other 2 were more acoustic and more lyrics-based and this one is more rhythm based, I haven't listened to much of it, but my guess is that it's more like the old Soul Coughing material than the solo Doughty I've liked. Regardless, it's not awful, it's just not as good as his others. I think the song I choose from the album is perhaps my favorite if only because I dig the chorus, "Navigating by the stars at night....medicating in the mini-van".
Over the Rhine "Ohio" - "Ohio"
I have one of their CDs and I had a number of other songs from various albums I had gotten from various places, but I never was a hardcore fan. I decided I had better get to know them better when
a_good_storm invited me to go see them with her later this month, so I asked for this CD for my birthday. This isn't their newest one, but I had a few songs from this record already and they were my favorites. This song in particular I love. When I first moved home after being in Ohio, I downloaded this song and it made me tear up. It's so beautiful and sad and makes me nostalgic for good ol' Ohio.
Nicole Atkins "Neptune City" - "Neptune City"
Nicole Atkins reminds of another time. There's something in her voice that feels like Connie Francis, but her music is more like Patsy Cline or maybe even Doris Day at times. I had her EP for over a year now, but then recently her album came out and
sleepypawn urged me to check it out. When I was looking for her music on-line I stumbled across the contest to win the album, and lo and behold, I did! This song was also on the EP, but I think the LP version is so much better because it's a bit slower and sadder...I am a sucker for a ballad.
Greg Laswell "Through Toledo" - "High and Low"
OMG I love this song! I had heard 2 songs by this guy and liked them both and thought I wanted to give him a try, thus getting the album. Damn, this album is really good, so I am so glad I did! Apparently he is dating Mandy Moore or something, go figure...I guess he is also a music producer and so he produced something of hers, I dunno. Anyway, yeah, he's very talented and a wonderful singer/songwriter. This song is a sad break-up song and it's just gorgeous, I absolutely adore it. It's one of those songs that made me stop what I was doing and go turn up the volume and listen a little closer. Beautiful.
Nerina Pallot "Fires" - "Idaho"
I first heard of Nerina through
ti's journal. I have no idea where she found her from, but she had a song of hers uploaded to her journal one day and I checked it out and loved it. So that night I went to her website and MySpace, listened to more and decided I HAD to have her album, despite it only being available as an import (she's British). The album is really great...she's sort of pop/rock/folk. She reminds me a bit of Emm Gryner if you know who she is. This song is amazing though, it's so powerful and beautiful, and just fun to sing along with.
